The good news: The Fountain of Youth finish made it into SportCenter’s Top 10 on the 6:00 Monday edition.
The bad news: The anchor referred to it as “the first Derby prep.”
Oh, well. At least racing got a little prime-time coverage.
Jenny Kellner’s got a nice piece on the NYRA website about the older horses in New York racing, in anticipation of Evening Attire’s entry into this Saturday’s Stymie, a race he won last year at a nice price. I watched it from the Meadowlands last March, hanging out for a day of simulcasting with some friends as we awaited the beginning of my brother’s surprise fortieth birthday party, in a private dining room upstairs for a night of harness racing. We’re going to do a little replay this year, except that I’ll head out to the Big A, catch the Stymie, and cruise over/under two rivers to make it to the Big M for an evening of harness racing and birthday celebrating. Happy birthday, brother and father!
My favorite line from the Kellner story comes from Richard Schosburg: “’I love the older horses,’ said Schosberg. ‘By the time they’re five years old, they get it. Having an older horse like that, it takes you a few years to figure out that they are actually training you.’”
A random piece of information, left over from my visit home to Saratoga last weekend: I forgot how cool it is to live in a place where you can buy the Racing Form at the grocery store. Brooklyn certainly has its charms, but nary a Form to be found in my local Gristede’s. Go to the Price Chopper, though, and you’re in luck!
Hope to have this week’s Take Ten! standings up tonight or tomorrow morning. I am not hopeful about my progress…
