With no Triple Crown on the line in this year’s Belmont Stakes, we don’t need to worry about rooting for history and we can focus on making money. The race isn’t called the test of the champion for nothing: the winner will have to have the stamina to run a mile and a half, longer than any of the horses have ever run, and based on the weather forecast, the winner will also have to contend with a pretty sloppy racetrack, courtesy of Tropical Storm Andrea.
One bit of history is on the line on Saturday: trainer Todd Pletcher is again running a filly in the Belmont, which he won with filly Rags to Riches in 2007 in one of the more memorable renewals of the 145-year-old race. Unlimited Budget will carry jockey Rosie Napravanik and gets a five-pound weight allowance because of her sex. Only three fillies have won the Belmont; the most recent before Rags to Riches was Tanya in 1905.
