The star of the show at Saratoga Race Course on the day of the Belmont Stakes was, understandably, Golden Tempo. He’d won the Kentucky Derby, he was trained by the first woman to win that race, and after facing skepticism about his ability to replicate that historic victory — he was sent to the post in the Belmont as the fifth betting choice — he scored a resounding win in the third leg of the Triple Crown.

But as stirring as Golden Tempo’s Belmont was, a horse that ran three races earlier may have turned in the most impressive performance of the day. That horse, it just so happens, lives in the stall right next to Golden Tempo.

Also trained by Cherie DeVaux, Englishman turned in an eye-popping run in the seven-furlong Woody Stephens on the Belmont undercard, winning by 5 ¾ lengths, tying the track record for the distance, and earning a Beyer Speed Figure of 115, the highest of any horse in any race in the United States this year.
