Friday quick picks

I don’t know why I even look forward to posting the weekly Take 10! standings; it’s an exercise in repeated humility, and at this point, I just may be humble enough, at least as far as this game goes.

26. Trip’s Triple Crown Stable…………..1,820,000
30. Stafford Stables……………………….1,571,750
48. Sleipneir Stables……………………..1,562,750
97. Quinella Castle…………………………..1,253,750
111. SecBar Stable……………………………..1,170,750
114. Superterrific Stables……………………1,142,000
137. Val’s Foolish Pleasure…………………..904,750
151. Brooklyn Backstretch…………………..777,400

Quinella Castle gets this week’s most improved with an impressive jump up twenty-two spots; honorable mention to SecBar and Trip’s Triple Crown Stable, who each moved up twenty, giving Trip the edge in the standings. As I posted yesterday, the winner gets $125 donated in his/her name to the equine/racing charity of his/her choice. Now THAT, I’m looking forward to.

If nothing else, our Take Back the Race! petition has generated a lot of internal and external discussion among the bloggers of the Thoroughbred Bloggers Alliance. Check out Handride, Power Cap, Superfecta, John, Michael, Dana, Railbird, and me for some fairly divergent views on the plans to change the name of the Distaff to the Ladies’ Classic, and to move all the filly/mare races to Friday from Saturday.

And if you agree that the changes are misguided, please join Barry Irwin of Team Valor and the
others who have signed the petition.

Beginning this weekend, Brooklyn Backstretch becomes a roving correspondent, as my two-week spring break begins and I’ll be wending my way southwesterly towards the Lane’s End at Turfway Park. My fairly convoluted route will take me briefly home to Saratoga, thence to Washington and Asheville en route to Lexington, and home through Middleburg, Virginia.

So expect some reporting from the road, but with perhaps a bit less frequency than is usual. I’m looking forward to time with friends; tours of horse farms; a visit to at least one bourbon distillery; and of course, a day at the races for a Grade II Derby prep at a track that I’ll be visiting for the first time. Feel free to offer comments and suggestions…

  1. Sounds like a great trip! If you’re breezing by Richmond at any point, give me a buzz if you have time for a visit!Given I have hardly any horses running this weekend, I expect to sink back to the basement by Monday LOL.

  2. After this weekend my reign will be short lived. I only have Anak Nakal running and we all know how marvelously he ran last time out. Overall, I’m estastic with how well I’ve done considering this is my very first venture into fantasy stable contests.I’m looking forward to your trip this way! Just wish tax season didn’t have to interfere with my horseracing and social life!
