At the paddock rail, a woman to her young daughter: “No, sweetie, most of the jockeys are boys. Channing Hill is the only jockey that’s a girl.” When told that Channing is in fact a boy, she says, “No! Have you seen those eyelashes?”

Puddles and raindrops, lots of them…

On Thursday, the New York Stallion Series Statue of Liberty Stakes. Raffie’s Treasure breaking badly (she’s the six)…

Sunday morning on the backstretch, following the first night of the New York-bred sales, a trainer on a pony, chatting on his cell phone: “Yeah, the rats sold for ten or twelve thousand…”

Haven’t seen this before, and still don’t know why it was there…


The Gentlemen’s Day exhibit—check out the guy getting a shave—


–and the bourbon tasting–so where, exactly, are the gentlemen? Only folks I saw tasting were women…

  1. You’re right about the eyelashes. Channing’s ridden for us, and every time he does, one of the partners will ask if he’s a girl. But the kid can definitely ride.
