Derby picks for charity

My picks are made, my league is created—now it’s your turn to join.

We’re kicking off the second annual Derby picks for charity contest at Brooklyn Backstretch. Join the Brooklyn Backstretch league in the Road to the Roses, and the winner will have a minimum $50 donation made in her name to the racing charity of her choice. I pledge the first $50; last year, a number of participants voluntarily donated (in amounts ranging from $10 to $25), and winner Triple Crown Katie donated $150 to the Disabled Jockeys Fund.

You don’t need to contribute to win…just join! Standings will be posted weekly at Brooklyn Backstretch, and the races begin this Saturday. The only rule is that you don’t get to make fun of me (publically, anyway) for my picks.

Get your stables set up and start collecting points—you can join our league with this information:

League Name: Brooklyn Backstretch

League Identifier: 56457284

Activation Code: 2614161665

And if you’re interested in contributing to the donation, please e-mail me at the e-mail address to the left.

Good luck!

  1. I joined up last night! Can’t wait to see everyone’s picks, I did mine on the fly so I have no idea where I’ll end up this year!

  2. This year the crown is up for the taking due to work conflicts…..but I’m still going to play, just won’t be able to analyze the horses like I did last year and be as serious at my handicapping. This year, my method is close my eyes, move my curser over the alphabet, click and then close my eyes, move my curser and click a horses name. Whatever I get, I get. Who knows this method might even work better than analysis! Good luck everyone!

  3. Thanks, everyone, for joining and playing…our numbers are up from last year, and I’m a little scared about how badly I’ll do!Anon: thanks for that terrific link. I hope to write about that story over the weekend.
