Brooklyn Backstretch Charity Derby league, Year 3

It is undeniably that time of year.

Brian’s back with his Derby prep overviews (check back later today for his analysis of the Sam Davis and the re-constituted Robert B. Lewis); Hello Race Fans! is sending out its weekly Derby e-mails (this week’s will contain my recap of the Whirlaway); and the Road to the Roses fantasy racing game has begun.

So we’re at it again, for the third year in a row: the Brooklyn Backstretch Road to the Roses Derby charity game. Join the Brooklyn Backstretch league in the Road to the Roses, and the winner will have a minimum $100 donation made in his or her name to the racing charity of his or her choice. I pledge the first $75; last year, a number of participants voluntarily donated (in amounts ranging from $10 to $25), and winner Lisa Grimm of Superfecta donated several hundred dollars to the Belmont Child Care Association. An additional $25 has already been pledged this year.

You don’t need to contribute to win…just join! Standings will be posted weekly at Brooklyn Backstretch, and the races begin next Saturday. The only rule is that you don’t get to make fun of me (publically, anyway) for my picks, which are designed to make me finish last.

My guiding principles this year: there has to be at least one cat horse in the stable; no horses with deliberately misspelled names are permitted; and I reserve the right to exclude horses just because there’s something about their connections I don’t like.

Get your stable set up and start collecting points—you can join our league with this information:

League Name: Brooklyn Backstretch

League Identifier/Number: 1079438899

Activation Code: 953401691

And if you’re interested in contributing to the donation, please e-mail me at the e-mail address to the left.

Good luck!

  1. Sorry for the delay in responding, anon. New Yorkers aren't eligible to win prizes through the official game on that website; you can still join our league, and the Brooklyn Backstretch donation is completely independent of the Road to the Roses guidelines. Thanks for checking, and I hope that you'll play–
