Charity check in

Some notes on organizations near and dear to Backstretch hearts, a couple of which are offering upcoming social opportunities for New Yorkers.

Local hockey fans might be interested to hear that Ice Hockey in Harlem, an organization with which I used to volunteer, is taking the opportunity of Olympic hockey to hold a fundraiser. On Sunday, February 21st, come to Forum (4th Avenue between 12th and 13th) to watch the United States and Canada square off. Cover is $30 for a limited open bar (well drinks and domestic drafts). Ice Hockey in Harlem teaches children to play hockey and offers a coordinating after-school education program—all at no cost to the children’s families. Students can begin in the program at age six and continue through high school. So come lift a few for a good cause, and watch what will be the premier match up in these Winter Olympics.

Next Wednesday, February 24th, the Brooklyn Bridge Animal Welfare Coalition is holding a fundraiser from 6:30 – 9:00 at Alibi Bar and Lounge at 116 McDougal Street in Greenwich Village. The event will feature music, a raffle, and drink specials for a donation of $10. The funds will go to Remy, a kitten who needs heart surgery to save her life.

You can get more info about the event and RSVP at the organization’s Facebook page or by calling (718) 360-9918.

Summer can’t be too far off if the Belmont Child Care Association is making plans for its annual summer fundraiser, its major annual event. This year’s event will honor D. Wayne Lukas and John and Leona Velazquez; it will take place on August 25th (Travers week) at the Gideon Putnam Hotel in Saratoga Springs. Much more info on this event to follow, and you can show your support for the BCCA by following them on Twitter and becoming a Facebook fan.

And finally, you’ve got the next few days to sign up for the Brooklyn Backstretch Road to the Roses Derby charity league. Info is here, and so far, pledges are up around $200; the winner gets it donated in her or her name to the racing charity of his or her choice. League members are under absolutely no obligation to contribute, so join just for the fun and the chance to win some money for your favorite racing charity.
