Tuesday morning quick picks

A quick Tuesday check-in from the girl who cried wolf about the website renovation…it’s in progress, and one of these days, if the technology gods are on our side, Brooklyn Backstretch will have a brand new look.

Until then, on we forge…

This week’s Road to the Roses charity league standings are below. And a month from Thursday, we’ll have a winner! As always, thanks to the many of you who have contributed to the donation.
If you’d prefer not to wait until the Kentucky Derby to make a donation to a racing charity, Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation has made it super-easy for you to donate to its spring hay drive. In its support of 1,200 horses, the TRF goes through 600 bales of hay daily and it’s trying to raise 60,000 bales by May 1—yes, Derby day. $5 = one bale of hay; $50 feeds a horse for two weeks; $100 pays for a wagonload, and $250 gets a truckload of hay to feed retired Thoroughbreds.

You can donate at the TRF website. Or: even better, even easier, even quicker, you can use your cell phone: Text “Support hay drive” to 20222 to make a $5 donation.

In other Thoroughbred retirement news, Old Friends at Cabin Creek, near Saratoga, recently announced that Thoroughbred racing’s most lovable loser, Zippy Chippy, will becomes its newest resident, scheduled to arrive on Thursday. Zippy Chippy raced 100 times without ever making it to the winner’s circle; Equidaily was present for his 100th race and wrote about it here. JoAnn Pepper, manager of Old Friends at Cabin Creek, wrote that Zippy’s owner and trainer, Felix Monserrati, will be personally escorting Zippy to the farm; Michael Blowen, president of Old Friends, and his wife Diane are also expected to be present.

And from Gulfstream Park, Teresa Pompay reports that 10-year-old Hotstufanthensome, seen here last week, will also be retired this spring. Hotstuf has been in Pompay’s barn at various times in his life, and he came back to her last year. Winner of two Grade 3 stakes, Hotstuf set a new track record in the Mac Diarmida at Gulfstream in 2006. Hotstuf, too, will be heading to a Thoroughbred retirement farm now that his racing days are over.

The trek north begins shortly, with the first stop at Tampa Bay Downs, a track to which I’ve been eager to return since my first visit a couple of years ago.
