Monday morning quick picks

Credit where credit is due. As commenter Andy first noted Saturday night, Brooklyn Backstretch’s own Brian Nadeau picked the top two winners in the Blue Grass. OK, so he didn’t pick them in order, but he did give out the winner on his Saturday afternoon chat on Horseplayer Now after seeing Paddy O’Prado’s odds, and picking a $572.60 exacta—even in the wrong order—deserves recognition. Congrats, Brian, and boy, do I wish that I’d bet it.

Scary moment in Saturday afternoon’s Comely at Aqueduct; making her up move up the rail under Mike Luzzi Edgar Prado, unbeaten and odds-on favorite She’ll Be Doggone was cut off sharply by Jose Espinoza Fernando Jara and Volare Cantare Anchorage. Though She’ll Be Doggone was jerked off balance and nearly went down, Luzzi Prado adeptly kept her upright, sparing the filly and himself injury. He, too, gets a Backstretch shout-out.

(I, however, get whatever the opposite of a shout-out is for so completely screwing up this race!)

That incident aside, how cool is it that a filly named Touching Beauty won the Comely?

I didn’t post a Road to the Roses update last weekend—apologies for that. Below are this week’s standings. I’ve got checks totaling $175 in donations, with more pledged to arrive; if you’re still interested in donating, please contact me.

NYRA has posted video of all of Personal Ensign’s races at Belmont and Saratoga; the only races missing are the Molly Pitcher at Monmouth and the Distaff at Churchill (the latter of which you can see at the post before this one). What a treat to have all of them in one place.

Back tomorrow with a report of my visit to Tampa Bay Downs.

  1. Tony Dutrow threw Prado under the bus for his ride……

Glad to see Prado defend himself in his comments on the ride…..

Jara would not have gotten days if it was all Prado’s fault….
