On Saturday night, Joe Torre was sitting in the restaurant at Charles Town Races in West Virginia, about 75 miles west of Baltimore. Among those at his table was his friend Bernie Schiappa, and they were there to watch their horse, Game On Dude, run in the $1.5 million Charles Town Classic.
Torre and Schiappa go back a ways. “How many years now, Bernie?” Torre asked across the table. “Like 10, 12 years,” Schiappa replied. They met in Hawaii, when they were both there for a Mercedes golf tournament. Schiappa retired in 2010 as general manager of a Mercedes-Benz dealership in Las Vegas, where he lives. He now manages horses for Ernie Moody’s Mercedes Stable, which also owns part of Game On Dude.
“Just so you know,” inserted Schiappa, leaning across the table and speaking of the golf game, “I won.”
