On Saturday, May 27, in his 14th year as a jockey, Joseph Rocco Jr. got his first Grade I win when Tiz Miz Sue won the Ogden Phipps Handicap at Belmont Park.
Exactly two months later, at Saratoga Race Course, he got his second.
Riding longshot Lighthouse Bay in last Saturday’s Prioress, Rocco rode the rail and sat patiently behind a quick pace, guiding the three-year-old filly up the inside when space opened up around the final turn. He won by a half-length and Lighthouse Bay paid $45.20.
“It was awesome,” said the 31-year-old, sitting outside the jockeys’ room this week. “Especially here at Saratoga. The crowd’s nuts.”
