She was a last-second impulse purchase, and her owner called her “a gift from God.” She lost only once in her first 12 races, and in 1999, she was the 3-year-old filly champion. Inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2009, she earned more than $3 million and she ran like her name. She’s Silverbulletday.
Silverbulletday was bred by Highclere Inc. & Clear Creek and sold in the 1997 Fasig-Tipton Kentucky July yearling sale. Purchased by Michael E. Pegram for $155,000, she was a last-minute addition to his stable.
“I wasn’t at the sale; Bob Baffert bought her for me,” he remembered when we spoke in 2012. “He hadn’t even seen her until she came into the back paddock, and all of a sudden she caught his eye. We had no idea we were even going to bid on her until she came into the sales ring.
“He called me and said, ‘I can’t believe we got her for that price.’ It was love at first sight.’”
