Kentucky Derby 140 is in the books, and now the talk of the first Triple Crown winner since 1978 begins. But before we move on to Baltimore to see if California Chrome can head to Belmont Park on June 7 to make racing history, let’s wrap up Kentucky Derby weekend.
The story of California Chrome has captured the imagination and the hearts of the racing community. His 78-year-old trainer became the oldest to win the Kentucky Derby; as an exercise rider in 1955, he took the train from California with Swaps, who would win the race that year. California Chrome was bred by his owners, Perry Martin and Steve Coburn, for the modest stud fee of $2,000, and he’s the first horse bred in California to win the Derby since Decidedly in 1962. Their racing silks bear the image of a donkey and the initials “DAP,” referring to the name of their partnership, Dumb Ass Partners.
