The horse racing world erupted when American Pharoah won the Triple Crown in June, and it erupted again on Monday morning when Sports Illustrated announced that Serena Williams had been chosen by the magazine’s editors as the 2015 Sportsperson of the Year.
Funny that, Sportsperson. The day before, SI noted that American Pharoah had been voted Sportsman of the Year in the online readers’ poll, but by rush hour Monday morning, Sportsman had become Sportsperson, even though four women were among the nominees when SI still thought it was OK to give the award to a Sportsman and not a Sportsperson.
Well, better late than never, I suppose.
But back to horse racing. The fans that had mobilized to send American Pharoah to a crushing victory in the readers’ poll revolted online when Williams was announced as the winner.
