Being an everyday horse trainer is a full-time job and then some. Being a Kentucky Derby winning trainer adds a whole new set of obligations; throw in making history by being the first woman trainer to win the Kentucky Derby, and let’s just say that if Cherie DeVaux’s responsibilities paid overtime, she’d be a very rich woman. 

A person talking about how busy they are generally doesn’t go over particularly well, because, correctly or not, “I’m so BUSY” can come across as “I’m so IMPORTANT.” To DeVaux’s credit, you’re not going to hear the trainer of Derby and Belmont Stakes winner Golden Tempo complain about the demands of her schedule or her job(s), at least not publicly. 

When pressed to talk about the incessant demands on her time and her insane schedule, she primarily expresses gratitude and a sense of mission in sharing her story, even as she admits to the challenges of creating a work-life balance, something that most of us can relate to.
