When the undefeated three-year-old colt Verrazano won the $1 million Wood Memorial at Aqueduct Racetrack in Queens, New York, on Saturday, he also earned the chance to make history in next month’s Kentucky Derby.
Verrazano made his first career start on New Year’s Day, winning at Florida’s Gulfstream Park by nearly eight lengths, and in what will be an oft-cited bit of Derby trivia for the next month, no horse since Apollo in 1882 has won the Kentucky Derby without racing as a two-year-old.

Verrazano has the class and talent to win the Kentucky Derby, but so do a few others. Hopefully he wakes up a little bit for the Derby–he almost appeared half-asleep in the Wood on Saturday, despite his looking around a couple times with ears pricked.
Hmmm…. I don’t see anyone breaking the Apollo jinx, BUT the last time a 3yo got to the derby undefeated , I believe his name was Smarty Jones and we all know how that turned out!
Last 3-year-old undefeated Derby winner was Barbaro… my Derby horse is Revolutionary. For now, anyway.
